Schlage Smart Lock Reset Code: Factory Reset by Model

There is no universal Schlage smart lock reset code. A factory reset restores your lock’s own default credentials, and the button sequence depends on the model. Find your original codes first, keep the door open, and use the matching instructions below before erasing working access.

Find your Schlage model first

Check the model number on the lock’s documentation or identification label. A similar touchscreen does not mean two locks share a reset procedure. For Connect, record the complete model number, including its suffix, and identify the radio and hub before choosing a path.

Is there a universal Schlage reset code?

No. Do not assume 000000, 123456 or a code from an online example belongs to your lock. “Reset code” can mean several different things: a code that opens the door, a credential used to program it, or a setup credential used to pair an app.

An access or user code is for everyday entry. A programming code, where the model uses one, authorizes configuration changes. A pairing credential connects compatible hardware to an app or smart-home platform. Not every Schlage family uses all three in the same way, and there is no single code length that covers every model and purpose.

Before proceeding, write down your actual goal. If you only need to replace one guest code, use the lock’s supported code-management method. If the app is offline or the bolt sticks, start with our Schlage smart lock troubleshooting guide. A full reset makes sense when you intentionally need to erase the lock’s configuration and can complete setup again.

Before resetting: find your codes and plan access

Before any reset: have authorized interior access, keep the door open, confirm working battery power and the exact model/manual, and locate the original factory credentials first. Plan how you will regain entry; do not assume every model has a physical key. Hosts should schedule an access interruption and arrange backup entry before removing guest codes.

Treat reset preparation as a short handover checklist. Confirm who will manage the lock afterward, which app or hub they will use, and which people need access restored. Keep a private record of settings you intend to recreate, without copying guests’ credentials into shared documents.

Where to find the factory credentials

Model familyFactory credential location
Encode / Encode PlusOriginal documentation or label on the front of the interior assembly, under the battery cover.
ArriveQuick Start Card or interior label under the battery cover.
Sense ProQuick Start Guide/card or label beside the reset button. Keep the separate app / Matter pairing credentials available.
ConnectOriginal documentation or the back of the inside assembly; inspecting the latter requires removing that assembly.
Original SenseUser Guide or stickers behind the interior assembly. The historical HomeKit setup credential is separate; read the warning below.
Legacy Keypad / TouchUse the label location in the exact model’s manual.

The label location matters. An Encode label can be visible with the cover removed; a Connect label may require removing the inside assembly. Follow the installation instructions if disassembly is necessary, support the hardware, and avoid pulling on its cable. Do not remove the programming sticker itself.

Schlage says it cannot recover lost default codes. Do not erase a working configuration on the assumption that a serial number will retrieve them later. If both the original paperwork and label are missing or unreadable, stop and ask support about your specific model’s options. Never post a photograph that exposes programming codes, access codes or pairing QR codes.

Reset Schlage Encode or Encode Plus

These steps cover the Encode BE489 and Encode Plus BE499 deadbolts. Schlage’s Encode reset instructions use a light sequence, so do not substitute a generic timed hold.

  1. With the door open, remove the interior battery cover.
  2. Hold the round black reset button to the right of the thumb-turn. Keep holding while its LED flashes red, until the red flashing stops.
  3. Look for a solid blue LED confirming completion. Schlage says blue can take up to 10 seconds to appear; that is not a universal instruction to hold the button for 10 seconds.
  4. With the door still open, press the House icon and enter factory User Code A or B to check initialization.

Custom codes and virtual keys are erased. Complete the correct setup for your exact model, then verify access before closing the door. Encode and Encode Plus have different integration options; follow the appropriate app instructions when reconnecting.

Reset Schlage Arrive

For Arrive BE459, use Schlage’s Arrive-specific sequence. Its black reset button has a spiral marking.

  1. Keep the door open and remove the battery cover.
  2. Hold the black spiral-marked button for 7 seconds. After roughly 2 seconds, red flashes begin at one-second intervals.
  3. Release at 7 seconds, when the lock beeps.
  4. Watch for the interior LED to flash blue and the keypad to cycle through white, red, amber and blue.
  5. Press the House icon, then enter factory User Code A or B with the door open to verify the reset.

Have the original codes from the Quick Start Card or interior label ready beforehand. Once the lock responds correctly, complete setup and recreate the access you need. Do not carry over the Encode timing just because both models use a black interior button.

Reset Schlage Sense Pro

The Sense Pro BE889 uses a blue interior button. It is a different lock from the original Sense BE479.

  1. Leave the door open and remove the battery cover.
  2. Hold the blue button for 10 seconds.
  3. Confirm the keypad illuminates and the light bar cycles white, red, yellow, blue and white, followed by the Schlage logo and two beeps.

That is the confirmation in Schlage’s Sense Pro reset guide. Resetting removes programmed codes and virtual keys. Have the default credentials ready before starting.

A brief press of the blue button is used for pairing; it is not the factory-reset hold. Schlage’s pairing instructions distinguish the programming QR credential used by Schlage Home from the Matter QR credential used for Apple Home setup. Choose the intended setup route and follow its prompts, including any battery-pack and door-configuration steps. Adding the lock back to an app does not verify that every former guest can enter.

Reset Schlage Connect: identify the exact variant

Connect needs extra care because Schlage documents different procedures with different network consequences. Confirm the full BE468 or BE469 model suffix, radio and applicable manual. Do not try both procedures in succession to see which one works.

Local codes and settings: Schlage’s general support procedure

Schlage’s general Connect reset page explicitly says this process clears codes and local settings but does not reset Z-Wave settings or unenroll the lock.

  1. Keep the door open, remove the battery cover and disconnect the batteries.
  2. Hold the exterior Schlage logo while reconnecting the batteries.
  3. Look for three flashes of the green keypad check and three flashes of the inside Schlage button.
  4. Test a factory user code with the door open. Successful initialization extends and retracts the bolt.

BE468ZP / BE469ZP: the model-specific Z-Wave guide

The manufacturer’s BE468ZP / BE469ZP protocol guide gives a separate reset sequence on printed page 7:

  1. Remove the battery cover and hold the interior button for about 7 seconds. Continue past its first illumination until it lights again, then release.
  2. Confirm three red flashes at the interior Schlage button and a blinking green touchscreen check.
  3. With the door open, press Schlage and enter a default user code to verify operation.

Its network section, on printed page 15, says this reset erases the Node ID and Home ID. Page 6 separately describes exclusion: put the controller in Remove/Exclusion mode, then briefly press and release the interior button and check its confirmation.

Use those instructions only for the documented ZP models. They are not blanket instructions for older NX or Zigbee variants. If your suffix or manual does not match, ask Schlage or your hub provider to identify the correct path. Check the hub afterward for stale device entries rather than assuming its device list cleaned itself up.

Reset original Schlage Sense BE479

Check your re-pairing options before erasing a working setup. In its September 2, 2026 Sense support update, Schlage says the discontinued BE479 cannot be newly paired with Apple HomeKit and describes Schlage Home pairing for local control. Older Schlage material still discusses HomeKit. Confirm your intended setup with support first; the update does not establish that every existing working installation has stopped functioning. This warning concerns original Sense, not Sense Pro.

If you have the original credentials and are ready to proceed, Schlage’s BE479 reset instructions are:

  1. Keep the door open, remove the battery cover and disconnect the batteries.
  2. Hold the exterior Schlage logo while reconnecting battery power.
  3. Confirm three flashes of the green keypad check and three flashes of the interior Schlage button.
  4. Press Schlage and enter a factory user code with the door open. The bolt should extend and retract during successful initialization.

The reset clears custom programming and user codes. Restore only the access and integrations supported by the setup you have confirmed.

Reset a legacy Schlage Keypad or Touch lock

Use the manual for your exact Keypad or Touch model. These families are not interchangeable with Encode, and they do not all have a motorized bolt or app setup.

Schlage’s current Keypad and Touch reset article gives this sequence:

  1. Disconnect the battery.
  2. Press and release the keypad’s Schlage button two or three times.
  3. Reconnect the battery within 10 seconds of that button action. The indicator lights green briefly.
  4. Immediately hold the Schlage button until the indicator turns green and the lock beeps.
  5. With the door open, try a factory user code.

The 10-second window is for reconnecting the battery, not a 10-second button hold. Have the factory credentials available and match the instructions to your hardware. If your model’s manual shows a different sequence, resolve that difference with support instead of combining steps from multiple guides.

What to do after a successful reset

Consider the reset complete only when the whole access setup works again. A success light answers one question: whether the reset sequence completed. It does not confirm that the right people, apps and schedules now have access.

  1. Verify local operation first. Keep the door open, use the factory credential specified by the model, and complete initialization or door configuration. Check manual movement before relying on automatic operation.
  2. Create your intended access. Follow the correct keypad, app or hub workflow to set personal credentials and recreate necessary users. Review settings such as auto-lock individually instead of assuming your previous choices survived.
  3. Reconnect the right system. Follow the exact model’s removal and re-pairing instructions. There is no universal order for deleting an app entry, resetting hardware and excluding a hub device. Confirm that order before starting a migration.
  4. Review permissions and automations. Check app invitations, home membership, hub routines and hosting integrations separately. Inspect both the lock’s access list and the service that manages it; do not treat a reset as proof that every cloud record disappeared.
  5. Test the finished setup. Confirm intended access works and removed access fails. Check remote operation separately if you use it. Retract the bolt before closing the door, then test closed-door operation with an authorized re-entry method available.

If you need to remove an obsolete Schlage Home entry, Schlage documents the lock’s three-dot menu and Delete Lock confirmation in its app removal guide. Check the lock name carefully before deleting an entry, especially if several properties have similar names.

For rentals, schedule the work between stays and verify the next guest’s access before relying on automation. Our Airbnb smart lock integration guide explains the wider code-management workflow. Treat your booking platform, access service and physical lock as separate checks during the handover.

An electronic reset does not rekey a physical cylinder, repair a binding door or provide a firmware downgrade. If you are changing ownership, assess physical keys and account access separately. If the lock ultimately needs replacement, our Schlage smart lock comparison can help you compare the current families.

Why the reset may not be working

Use the observed result to choose the next check. Avoid repeating a reset blindly, especially when some functions still work. Note the exact light sequence, which button you pressed and whether you tested with the door open.

What happenedWhat to check next
No lights or responseBattery type, orientation, contacts and tray or connector seating for the exact model.
Expected confirmation never appearedModel number, correct button and that model’s timing. Do not substitute another family’s light sequence.
Factory code is rejectedCorrect lock’s sticker, user code rather than pairing credential, and completion of initialization.
Keypad works but app setup failsPairing credentials, existing app/controller associations and the intended setup route.
Bolt still bindsDoor alignment and open-door movement checks, rather than another reset.

If your model specifies AA alkaline batteries and yours need replacing, Energizer MAX AA alkaline batteries are one option. Follow your model’s battery specification; buying batteries does not require performing a factory reset.

There is no single meaning for every red light across these models. If the documented sequence still fails, use Schlage’s support resources with the full model number and a clear description of the symptoms. Share credential photographs only through an appropriate private support channel if requested, never in public comments.

If you are outside without access to the interior, these procedures are not an entry method. Use an available authorized backup, contact the property manager, or arrange a locksmith. Do not start dismantling the exterior in an attempt to reach a reset control.

Frequently asked questions

Can I reset a Schlage lock without the current programming code?

The physical procedures above do not require entering your current custom programming code. You still need authorized interior access and your model’s original factory credentials to complete setup afterward. Finding those credentials comes before resetting.

What if I cannot find the original codes?

Check the original paperwork and the correct label location for your model. Schlage says it cannot retrieve missing default codes. Stop before erasing a working setup and ask support about your options; do not rely on a generic internet code.

Does a factory reset erase all custom access?

Expect the documented reset to clear programmed access at the lock. Check the specific model’s scope, then review apps, hub entries, invitations and hosting services separately. Test that removed access no longer works before handing the property over.

Does resetting Connect remove its hub enrollment?

It depends on the exact model and procedure. Schlage’s general local-code reset page says Z-Wave enrollment remains. The BE468ZP/BE469ZP protocol guide describes a different reset that clears network identifiers. Match your suffix and manual; do not assume every Connect behaves alike.

Can I factory-reset the lock from outside?

The procedures here require interior access to the battery connection or reset control. They are not a way to bypass a locked door. Use your authorized entry method or seek help from the owner, manager or a locksmith.

How we prepared this guide

Entry Scout checked the linked Schlage support instructions and manufacturer BE468ZP/BE469ZP protocol guide on October 2, 2026. This is documentation-based guidance, not a claim of hands-on testing. We separated model-specific timing, Connect network behavior and original Sense re-pairing limitations rather than applying one reset sequence to every Schlage lock.
