Schlage Smart Lock Not Working? Troubleshooting Guide

If your Schlage smart lock is not working, identify the model and check which functions still respond. Start with battery power and free bolt movement, then investigate the keypad, access code or connection involved. A factory reset comes later, when the relevant model’s instructions call for it.

If you are inside, keep the door open during testing and retract the bolt before closing it. If locked out, use an available authorized backup method or contact the property manager or a locksmith. Sense Pro owners should follow the USB-C backup-power instructions below. Interior assembly checks require access from inside.

Which Schlage lock do you have?

Find the model number in your manual, app product information or the lock’s interior label, if accessible. Exterior trim alone is not reliable identification. Keep programming stickers, setup QR codes, access codes and account credentials private.

Lock / modelWhich instructions apply?
Arrive / BE459Wi-Fi and Schlage Home; Arrive indicators and setup.
Encode deadbolt / BE489Schlage Home Wi-Fi; not Encode Plus.
Encode Plus / BE499Separate Schlage Home, Apple Home and home key issues.
Sense Pro / BE889Key-free design, USB-C power backup and its own setup.
Original Sense / BE479Bluetooth lock; identify the adapter or Apple Home setup.
Connect / BE468 or BE469 familyConfirm suffix and Z-Wave/Zigbee radio; use the paired hub.
Keypad / Touch, e.g. BE365 / BE375Separate electronic families; use their specific manuals.

Schlage’s current app compatibility list includes Arrive, the Encode series, Sense Pro and original Sense. Connect is different: troubleshoot its connected features through the compatible hub or panel you actually use. Sense Pro and original Sense also require different instructions despite their similar names.

Before changing anything, note what still works: a current keypad code, the inside thumbturn, nearby app control and remote app control. That short record helps you choose the right section and gives support more useful information than “the lock is broken.”

Four Schlage troubleshooting paths: power, bolt movement, keypad and codes, and connection.
Identify the model and the functions that still work before choosing a troubleshooting path.

Why is the keypad dead, even after changing the batteries?

No lights or sounds

For Encode BE489 and Encode Plus BE499, use four new AA alkaline batteries. Follow the markings for polarity, seat the battery tray securely and replace the cover. Schlage’s Encode battery instructions recommend against lithium and rechargeable cells. Check the manual before applying that procedure to another family.

Look for visible leakage, damaged contacts or an improperly seated tray. If you see damage, contact support rather than improvising a contact repair. An app battery percentage does not prove that power is reaching every component.

Replacing batteries is routine maintenance, not a reason to erase the lock. If your Schlage lock is not working after a battery change, recheck the type, orientation and tray seating before reaching for the reset button.

One suitable battery option is Energizer MAX AA alkaline batteries, 24 count. This brand is not uniquely required; follow the battery specification for your model. For a lock that works but keeps exhausting fresh batteries, see our Schlage Encode battery-drain guide.

The app works but the keypad does not

A successful app command narrows the problem but does not prove the keypad is healthy. Schlage’s Encode keypad guide identifies the through-door cable as a possible lost-power point after battery checks.

Inspect that connection only with authorized access from inside, the door open and the bolt retracted, following the exact installation instructions. Do not pull on wires or improvise bent-pin repairs. If you cannot confidently follow the procedure, let the installer or Schlage handle it.

For Encode, a white input/programming LED blinking continuously without keypad interaction is a reason to contact Schlage. Persistent keypad failure also warrants support. Arrive BE459 has its own keypad troubleshooting sequence, including checking available firmware updates in Schlage Home. Do not substitute an Encode procedure simply because the symptoms sound similar.

Why does the motor run but the deadbolt not lock or unlock?

For Arrive, Encode, Encode Plus, original Sense and the supported Connect deadbolts, compare operation with the door open. Schlage’s stuck-deadbolt guidance separates these clues:

  1. Works open, binds closed: investigate door alignment, strike position and the preparation specified for your lock.
  2. Resists movement even while open: check installation and visible obstruction before investigating connectivity.
  3. Moves freely by the authorized manual method, but powered movement fails: follow the model’s motor/power troubleshooting path or contact support.

These observations narrow the investigation; they do not prove a component has failed. Do not force the thumbturn or repeatedly run a stalled motor. Avoid grinding the strike or tightening every screw as a first response. Use the model’s door-preparation measurements and installation guide.

Retract the bolt before closing the door. If it cannot be operated or secured safely, stop and contact the property manager, installer or locksmith. Sense Pro owners should use the Sense Pro instructions, since it has no mechanical keyway. Deadbolt movement tests do not apply to an Encode Lever.

Why does Schlage Home say the lock is offline or unreachable?

Try a current local access code if you can do so safely. On Encode and Encode Plus, “Unreachable” in Schlage Home concerns communication with Schlage’s cloud. It is not, by itself, proof that keypad entry has stopped working.

Check whether the home network actually has internet. Connect your phone to the lock’s Wi-Fi network and temporarily turn off cellular data so it cannot conceal an outage. Confirm the router or extender is running, then check signal at the door. A good connection beside the router does not establish good coverage at the lock.

Encode-series power cycle

If the network checks pass, Schlage’s Encode Unreachable procedure gives this restart for BE489/BE499 deadbolts:

  1. Keep the door open and retract the bolt.
  2. Remove the cover and battery tray; leave the tray out for 10 seconds.
  3. Reinstall the tray securely, extend the bolt, then retract it.
  4. Sign out of the app and sign back in if needed.

This is a restart, not a factory reset. Do not hold a reset button, and do not apply this timing to every Schlage model.

It works nearby but not remotely

Nearby Bluetooth control and away-from-home access test different connections. For original Sense BE479, Schlage’s September 2, 2026 support notice says HomeKit pairing is no longer available and describes Schlage Home as local-only, with no remote access or Wi-Fi features. If an existing adapter or Apple Home setup still works, confirm your re-pairing options with Schlage before removing it or factory-resetting the lock. Do not assume this notice means every existing installation has stopped working. Wi-Fi is not built into the original Sense lock.

With Connect, check the paired hub or security panel and its connection to the lock. On Encode Plus and Sense Pro, record whether the failure affects Schlage Home, Apple Home or only one entry method before removing an integration. Our guide to smart locks without Wi-Fi explains the difference between local entry and remote features.

Why won’t the lock pair or find my Wi-Fi network?

First identify the failed stage: adding the lock to the app or connecting it to Wi-Fi. Select the correct model, follow its setup prompts, allow the required Bluetooth/app permissions and stay near the lock during commissioning. Check power before repeatedly restarting setup. For an already commissioned lock, confirm the existing owner’s setup before deleting it.

Arrive, Encode, Encode Plus and Sense Pro use 2.4GHz for their Wi-Fi connection. A dual-band router can provide that band; owning one does not automatically make the router incompatible. Connect’s Z-Wave/Zigbee connection and original Sense’s separate adapter require their own checks.

If the network is missing, check coverage and whether the SSID is hidden. Schlage provides an “Other Network” option for manual entry. Its network-list guidance distinguishes Sense Pro’s WPA2/WPA3 support from the WPA/WPA2 support listed for older families. Read the section for your model. Do not remove encryption or use an open network to make setup easier.

For Encode/Encode Plus, Schlage’s Wi-Fi pairing article lists password-length, space and character restrictions. Treat these as model-specific checks against current app guidance, not universal router rules. Changing a household password affects other devices; a guest network with client isolation may introduce separate integration problems. Ask support to confirm the appropriate configuration before making disruptive changes.

Why is the access code rejected or the red X flashing?

An access code opens the door; a programming code administers supported settings. They are not interchangeable. If one current entry code works and another does not, check whether the rejected code is correct, enabled and within its allowed schedule. A working code is a reason to investigate that user’s access before resetting everyone’s credentials.

For paired Arrive and Encode locks, use Schlage Home’s access management rather than assuming the original keypad programming code remains active. Schlage’s programming-code help routes paired smart locks to their app or paired device. Connect owners should follow the code-management instructions for the actual hub/panel arrangement.

There is no reliable brand-wide red-X decoder. Note the model, flash/beep pattern and whether it occurs before, during or after entry. For example, Schlage’s BE469ZP Connect guidance distinguishes an invalid code, temporary lockout after repeated wrong attempts and Vacation Mode. Its 30-second lockout advice is not a Sense Pro rule.

If an Encode red X appears before you finish entering a code, use the Encode-specific diagnostic page and contact support about persistent failure. Repeating resets is not a dependable cure for a keypad fault.

Why won’t one-touch locking or auto-lock work?

The outside lock button and timed auto-lock are separate features. If a valid code works but pressing the lock button does nothing, check the relevant setting. Arrive calls it One-Touch Locking; Connect documentation uses Lock & Leave. Use the troubleshooting entry for your family.

For auto-lock, check that it is enabled and confirm the selected delay. Neither setting repairs a binding bolt or guarantees the door itself is closed. Establish smooth operation first, then test the behavior under the conditions described in your manual.

What should you check on a newly installed lock?

If it has never worked, revisit setup before treating it as an intermittent network problem. Use Schlage’s installation manuals and templates for the exact model:

  1. Match the manual to the model number and hardware in front of you.
  2. Check batteries, tray seating and the specified connectors.
  3. Confirm that supplied components were installed as directed.
  4. Check free bolt travel with the door open.
  5. Complete that model’s initial setup or handing procedure.

Do not borrow a calibration button sequence from another family. Some Schlage electronic keypad locks require manual bolt operation, so the absence of motor movement is not automatically a failure. Renters and hosts should involve the person responsible for installation before changing hardware or removing a working access setup.

What if a Sense Pro battery dies or hands-free unlocking stops?

Sense Pro BE889 has no physical keyway. Its USB-C jump-start port sits underneath the touchpad. Following the official jump-start instructions, move the protective cover aside and connect a compatible external power source with a USB-C cable. Once powered, unlock using an authorized user code or NFC credential.

This supplies temporary power; it does not bypass authentication or recharge the disposable AA batteries. Schlage lists USB battery packs among compatible sources and excludes Lightning-equipped iPhones. Replace the lock batteries after regaining access. Do not apply a generic 9V jump-start instruction to this model.

If keypad or tap access works but hands-free entry does not, focus on the hands-free setup. Check supported Apple devices, the required Thread-enabled home hub, software/firmware updates and the configured entrance mode. Touch, Delay and Intuitive modes behave differently. Consult Schlage’s Sense Pro FAQ and setup guidance for current requirements. Encode Plus tap-to-unlock instructions do not describe Sense Pro’s UWB approach unlocking.

When should you factory-reset the lock or contact Schlage?

Reset only after the relevant power, mechanical and connection checks, or when your model’s pairing instructions specifically require it. A factory reset can remove codes, pairing and settings. It cannot repair damaged wiring or correct a misaligned door.

Before starting, confirm authorized access, locate the model-specific setup information and plan how household or guest access will be restored. Select the correct procedure through Schlage’s programming guides. There is no universal reset code or button-hold duration for this range.

For a persistent fault, contact Schlage US residential support at 888-805-9837. Have the model, purchase information, indicator pattern, working entry methods and checks already attempted ready. Ask about applicable warranty coverage before purchasing a replacement; electronics coverage is not the same as lifetime mechanical coverage.

If the door cannot be secured or you are locked out without an authorized backup, contact your property manager or a locksmith. If support confirms replacement is appropriate, compare the current Schlage smart locks to choose the entry methods and backup access you need.

Frequently asked questions

Does a Schlage lock still work without Wi-Fi?

Battery-powered local code entry can keep working during a Wi-Fi outage. Remote commands, notifications and other connected features depend on the model and setup. Check a current local code separately from an offline app message.

Why did new batteries not fix it?

Battery type, orientation and tray seating still matter. A disconnected cable, damaged keypad or binding bolt can remain after fresh batteries are installed. Follow the symptom-specific section rather than assuming a reset is next.

Does removing the batteries erase codes?

Routine battery replacement is not the factory-reset procedure. For Encode/Encode Plus, replacing the tray alone is not a reason to re-create access codes. Follow your model’s battery instructions without adding a reset-button action.

Why can I unlock in the app but not at the keypad?

The app and keypad are different entry paths. Check keypad power and the model-specific diagnostic guidance. Persistent Encode keypad failure, particularly a red X before full code entry, should go to Schlage support.

Should I factory-reset an offline lock?

Start with the home internet connection, lock coverage and the documented restart for your model. Consider factory reset only at the appropriate troubleshooting step, with a plan to restore credentials and integrations.

When is replacement appropriate?

After installation and setup issues have been ruled out and support identifies a hardware fault or an unsuitable repair. Review warranty options first. A brief internet outage or one expired guest code does not establish that the lock needs replacing.
