Airbnb Smart Lock Integration: Compatible Locks + Setup

Airbnb smart lock integration can automate guest codes through a direct connection or a compatible property-management system. For eligible US and Canadian listings, the direct route supports selected Schlage, Yale and August configurations. Choose the service that will manage your codes first, then verify the exact lock, Wi-Fi setup and required accessories.

Which smart locks work with Airbnb?

Airbnb’s direct connection currently supports eligible US and Canadian listings, with one connected lock per listing. Start with the exact model and its connection package. A familiar brand name, a keypad or a Wi-Fi logo alone does not establish reservation-code compatibility.

This roster follows Airbnb’s current compatible-lock list, checked October 1, 2026. For August, the listed keypad options are Yale Keypad, Yale Keypad Touch, Yale Smart Keypad and August Smart Keypad; confirm the accessory works with your particular lock. Yale’s Airbnb guidance also distinguishes Wi-Fi configurations and vacation-rental packages.

Schlage Arrive, Schlage Connect, original Schlage Sense, Yale Smart Lock with Matter and Nest x Yale are not listed for direct Airbnb integration at this check. That does not mean they cannot serve any rental or work through another service. Matter, Thread, Apple Home and remote unlocking are separate capabilities from automatic reservation access.

Match the lock to the entrance, too. Encode and Assure Lock 2 replace a deadbolt; Encode Lever serves a suitable lever-lock opening. Retrofit options such as August and Yale Approach retain compatible existing exterior hardware but need the supported keypad arrangement. Our best smart locks for Airbnb and rental properties guide compares the hardware in more detail.

The cards above link to Encode BE489WB CAM 619, Camelot Satin Nickel, and Yale YRD450-WF1-619, key-free touchscreen with Wi-Fi in Satin Nickel. The Yale selection is not the separate Connect-bridge vacation-rental bundle. If you already own a supported lock, check its configuration before buying a replacement.

Should you connect directly to Airbnb or use a PMS?

Choose who manages the codes before connecting the lock. For an Airbnb-focused property with one guest entrance, the direct route is a reasonable starting point. When reservations also arrive through Vrbo, Booking.com or your own website, a property-management system, or PMS, may make the access workflow easier to manage.

RouteWho manages codes?Best fit

PMS-managedThe PMS coordinates supported reservationsMultiple channels or more complex access
Manual keypad useThe host creates, sends and removes codesA workflow you can reliably maintain
Direct connection: Airbnb creates and manages codes. PMS-managed access: the PMS creates and manages codes for connected booking channels.

Manual keypad management remains an option, but it leaves you responsible for creating, sending, scheduling and removing codes. A lock being usable at an Airbnb does not mean Airbnb controls it. Decide whether you want that ongoing job before treating a lower hardware price as the whole cost.

Airbnb also documents code sharing from supported PMS connections. In that arrangement, the PMS creates and manages access while codes may appear in Airbnb’s guest experience. Airbnb does not receive the lock’s real-time battery or connectivity status through this route. Confirm that your particular PMS implements code sharing before relying on it.

For Hospitable, follow its connection instructions: disconnect other code-generating services, including direct Airbnb lock management, before connecting the same lock. One service should own code automation. Two independent managers can leave you with conflicting codes, stale messages and an unclear troubleshooting trail.

Hospitable documents reservation messaging with the smart-lock code. That is not a promise that every account places the code in Airbnb’s native trip-guide field. Our Hospitable smart lock integration guide covers that software workflow and its plan requirements.

Check its hardware list separately. Airbnb lists Sense Pro, but Hospitable’s Schlage-app support list names Encode, Encode Plus and Encode Lever. We would not assume Sense Pro support from the Airbnb listing. Compare the service’s current supported models and eligible plans before subscribing.

How do you connect a smart lock to Airbnb?

These steps cover the direct Airbnb connection. Airbnb says the primary host or a full-access co-host should perform setup because it authorizes access to information in the lock account. The menu sequence comes from its connection walkthrough; the physical checks below are our practical recommendations.

  1. Confirm the route and door fit. Check your listing’s eligibility, the exact model and any required keypad, module or bridge. Before ordering, compare the manufacturer’s door-preparation requirements with your entrance. If a PMS will manage access, use that service’s workflow instead of completing a competing direct connection.
  2. Commission the lock in its own app. Install it according to the manufacturer’s instructions, update its software and establish the recommended network connection. Check that the bolt moves freely with the door closed and that authorized keypad entry works. Account setup alone does not prove the hardware is ready for a guest.
  3. Open the correct Airbnb listing. Go to Listings, select the property and open the listing editor. Follow Arrival guide → Check-in method → Smart lock → Connect. Make sure you are editing the intended property, especially if several listings have similar names or share a building.
  4. Link the intended lock account. Choose the manufacturer, sign into the account that manages the lock and review the requested permissions. Complete the connection for the correct entrance. If the device is missing, resolve model, account or connectivity issues before changing unrelated settings or buying different hardware.
  5. Set timing and arrival instructions. Review check-in, checkout and the post-checkout access window. Add a usable backup entry method. Check your scheduled messages for an old static PIN and describe the correct entrance and keypad operation clearly. Keep staff access separate from the reservation-code workflow.
  6. Verify before the next arrival. Confirm Airbnb shows the connection and review the code handling for real upcoming reservations. Have someone check the physical lock and your backup-access arrangement. Leave time to resolve a problem while help is available, rather than discovering it when the next guest reaches the door.

When do guests receive their code, and when does it work?

Receiving a code is different from being able to use it. Airbnb’s code-sharing guidance says newly booked guests receive it after confirmation. It appears in their trip information and email, with reminder communications before arrival. Do not assume the code is withheld until 48 hours before check-in because some arrival instructions follow that timing.

Under the direct connection, the normal reservation code becomes active at check-in. Airbnb’s access-time settings default to expiry 30 minutes after checkout, with a configurable post-checkout window from 15 minutes to two hours.

If you approve an early arrival or late departure, use Airbnb’s supported reservation or access-time controls and verify the update has synced. A chat message agreeing to “another hour” does not itself change the lock. Guests enter the PIN on the keypad; they do not need the manufacturer’s app, an enrolled fingerprint or the owner’s Apple Home credential for that workflow.

What happens to existing bookings and old codes?

According to Airbnb’s existing-reservation guidance, upcoming stays receive new integration codes when you connect the lock. Guests already checked in generally keep the instructions previously supplied; an accepted trip change can trigger a new code. Manually created codes are not automatically removed. We recommend reviewing active guest and staff access before switching systems, checking scheduled messages and arranging on-site help if needed. Preserve an occupied property’s working access; do not treat a factory reset or blanket code deletion as a routine migration step.

What if Wi-Fi drops or a guest code fails?

First identify whether the problem is timing, synchronization, connectivity or the physical lock. Those situations need different responses. Repeatedly sending the same PIN will not help a guest standing at the wrong entrance or using a keypad with exhausted batteries.

SymptomFirst checks
Lock missing during connectionExact model, account access, native-app setup, firmware and network
Code fails before arrivalActivation time, correct reservation and synchronization
Old PIN in a messageStatic message templates, duplicate automations or incomplete migration
Lock offlineInternet outage versus depleted batteries; native app and physical lock
Guest cannot use keypadModel-specific entry instructions and configured backup entry method

Airbnb’s lock-status guidance distinguishes a Wi-Fi outage from dead batteries. Scheduled codes already stored on an operable lock can continue working offline. A new booking or an access-time change may need a backup code if the new information cannot sync. Status reporting can lag, so allow for that when comparing Airbnb with the manufacturer’s app.

Airbnb’s backup codes are preloaded without an expiration time. After one is shared, it is removed after the trip when the lock is online. If you cannot restore the connection, you must remove the used code manually after checkout. Do not mistake its “always active” appearance for a normal scheduled guest code.

A backup PIN still needs a working lock. It cannot repair a broken keypad or restore depleted batteries. Physical backup access is a separate safeguard: choose an arrangement an authorized person can actually reach from outside, and maintain it alongside the lock. With a key-free Yale model, do not promise guests a mechanical key for that same deadbolt.

Our Airbnb smart lock guest codes guide covers the ongoing access process. Keep private access details in the appropriate guest instructions and authorized messages, rather than in public listing text.

What does Airbnb smart-lock integration cost?

Build the budget in layers: the lock, any required keypad or connectivity accessory, installation, backup-access equipment and your chosen software. Finish and sale variant can change hardware pricing; the product buttons above show the selected offers. Schlage’s Encode documentation confirms built-in Wi-Fi, so a separate Wi-Fi hub is not needed for its basic remote-management route.

You do not need to buy a PMS simply to use Airbnb’s documented direct connection. A PMS is a separate operational choice, particularly when you need reservations from several channels to feed one access process. Compare the time it saves with the recurring bill and any additional device requirements.

For Hospitable’s built-in smart-device automation, its current support pricing table identifies Professional and Mogul, rather than Essentials or Host. Checked October 1, 2026, Professional’s base is $59 per month, including two active properties and two devices per active property. Additional properties or devices may increase the bill; confirm the current plan terms for your setup before paying.

We would start with direct integration for an eligible Airbnb-only workflow, and compare PMS options when you can name the extra work they will handle. Whichever route you choose, keep one code manager, verify the exact hardware and make backup access part of the setup.

Frequently asked questions

Can I connect more than one lock to an Airbnb listing?

Airbnb’s direct connection supports one lock per listing. If guests need several controlled entrances, check a PMS’s specific multi-lock capabilities, supported models and device allowances. Do not assume an extra lock can simply be added to the same direct connection.

Does direct integration work outside the US and Canada?

The documented direct route currently covers US and Canadian listings. A third-party service may have different geographic coverage. Verify its supported country, local lock model and account requirements; availability of a similar-looking lock abroad does not establish integration support.

Does Schlage Arrive work with Airbnb or Hospitable?

Arrive is not on Airbnb’s checked direct-connection roster, and Hospitable explicitly lists it as unsupported. Do not transfer Encode’s compatibility to Arrive because both are Schlage Wi-Fi products. Recheck the current service lists before buying for automated guest codes.

Do guests need the lock manufacturer’s app?

Not for the documented keypad-code workflow. Guests use their assigned PIN at the lock. Give them clear directions for finding the entrance and operating that particular keypad, plus a way to reach help if entry fails.

Can Airbnb manage Vrbo and direct-booking codes?

Do not rely on the direct Airbnb connection to automate reservations from other channels. A compatible PMS can coordinate access across the booking sources it supports. Alternatively, you can manage those stays manually, with clear responsibility for sending and removing their codes.

How we researched this guide

We checked Airbnb’s Help Center and host resources, manufacturer compatibility information, and Hospitable’s supported-lock, connection and pricing documentation on October 1, 2026. We also matched the linked purchase variants to their model, finish and product photographs. These recommendations reflect documented compatibility and workflow fit, not hands-on testing. Recheck the relevant service’s current model list and plan terms before purchasing or changing an active property’s setup.
