For straightforward security camera continuous recording, start with a powered camera: Wyze Cam v4 near an outlet or Reolink CX410 where you can run Ethernet. The battery-powered Reolink Altas PT Ultra is a genuine continuous-recording exception, but its solar charging and battery settings need closer attention.

What counts as continuous recording?

A useful 24/7 archive lets you choose an arbitrary time, including a quiet moment with no motion alert, and play the video saved then. Continuous recording should preserve the selected recording frame rate throughout the scheduled period. The camera still needs working power and storage; “24/7” is a recording capability, not an uptime guarantee.

That matters when you discover a scratched car, an open gate or a missing delivery hours later. You may know roughly when something happened without having an alert that identifies it. A continuous timeline gives you the surrounding activity to investigate.

Recording modeWhat gets savedMain limitation
Continuous videoVideo throughout the selected scheduleNeeds sustained power and more storage
Motion clipsDetected eventsQuiet or undetected activity is absent
Pre-rollA short lead-in attached to an eventDoes not establish a full-day archive
Interval captureSpaced images, sometimes switching to video on detectionMovement between images can be missed
Time lapseA condensed view of sampled momentsNot a substitute for real-time evidence

“Always on,” live view and an event timeline do not tell you which mode is stored. Likewise, a low-frame-rate stream can cover the whole day while preserving much less motion detail. Check both the recording schedule and the idle frame rate, rather than relying on the headline alone.

Three practical routes to a 24/7 archive

Wyze Cam v4: simple local recording near an outlet

Wyze Cam v4 is the straightforward plug-in Wi-Fi option here. Its current product page lists local 24/7 recording to a separately purchased microSD card. The model-specific technical specifications list a 256GB card limit, while a product-page FAQ still says 512GB. We use the more conservative 256GB support specification; confirm compatibility before buying a larger card. Outdoor use requires the separately sold Wyze Outdoor Power Adapter. Account for that accessory when comparing prices.

Install compatible storage, then use Settings → MicroSD Card to enable Record to MicroSD Card and select Continuous. Wyze documents that setting in its Cam v4 recording guide. Review the SD Card timeline, including times with no event marker. A cloud subscription is unnecessary for the local-recording workflow; cloud features are a separate decision.

Reolink CX410: a wired route with room to expand

The CX410 specifications explicitly include 24/7 recording, 256GB maximum microSD storage and IEEE 802.3af active PoE. Its default recording mode is motion recording, so do not assume a newly installed camera has already built a continuous archive.

For a single camera, suitable PoE power plus microSD can be sufficient. For centralized storage, choose a compatible Reolink NVR and hard drive. The recorder, storage, Ethernet run and installation are extra unless the exact bundle includes them. A PoE-capable NVR may supply camera power itself; a plain router Ethernet port does not.

Choose this route when continuous coverage matters enough to justify running cable. Our wired vs. wireless camera guide covers the broader installation decision.

Reolink Altas PT Ultra: the battery exception

Reolink specifically confirms that the Altas PT Ultra can record continuously to its own microSD card or a compatible Home Hub. Its support specifications list up to 512GB microSD storage and the 6W Solar Panel 2. Verify that the advertised kit actually contains that panel.

There is an important power trade-off. Reolink’s product page ties its solar continuous-recording claim to five hours of direct daily sunlight with Solar Panel 2. Treat that as a manufacturer condition, not a promise for a shaded wall or winter weather. Plan how you will recharge when the installation cannot replenish the energy it uses.

Also inspect Smart Battery Mode. When enabled, it can reduce idle recording to a lower frame rate as the battery falls, then stop continuous recording below a configured threshold and retain PIR-triggered events. A timeline filled at 1, 3 or 5 fps is different from full-rate video. Disabling energy-saving behavior does not remove the battery limit.

For panel placement, changing seasons and charging constraints, see our solar cameras without a subscription guide. For a location where every hour must be preserved, sustained wired power remains the more predictable starting point.

Models and marketing terms that need a closer look

eufy SoloCam E30: conditional direct-power support

The current E30 FAQ confirms 24/7 recording with direct power. It requires microSD when connected to a router, or an HDD when paired with HomeBase. Solar charging alone is not the stated 24/7 configuration. The FAQ does not specify a minimum camera firmware version or a complete approved power-accessory configuration. Before buying it specifically for continuous recording, confirm those details for your unit with eufy and verify that the recording option appears in the app. Do not transfer specifications from the similarly named Floodlight Camera E30.

Tapo C120 and C460: verify the exact mode

Tapo C120 listings can refer to different hardware revisions. We are not treating the model name alone as proof that every version and configuration behaves identically. Check the label, regional support page, firmware and storage destination. TP-Link’s continuous-recording instructions explain how to configure supported units; verify applicability to yours before purchase.

The Tapo C460’s 24/7 Continuous Capture is a different mechanism: it takes images at configurable intervals, then switches to standard recording when an object is detected. Its round-the-clock coverage should not be presented as uninterrupted full-frame-rate video. A long interval may be fine for observing a parked vehicle, but a fast action can happen between samples.

How much storage does continuous video need?

Calculate from the total stored bitrate, not resolution alone. A useful approximation using decimal gigabytes is: GB per day ≈ total bitrate in Mbps × 10.8. Retention in days is usable capacity in GB divided by that daily figure. Include every stream and camera being saved; Reolink’s storage guide explains why main and sub-stream bitrates may both count.

Example, not a product promise: assume one camera stores a combined constant 4 Mbps stream. It uses roughly 43.2GB per day. A nominal 256GB card gives about 5.9 days before allowing for formatting, reserved space and other overhead. At 8 Mbps, that estimate halves. Variable bitrate, audio and recording settings change the real result.

Use a compatible high-endurance card intended for repeated video writes. Confirm whether loop recording overwrites the oldest footage or recording stops when storage fills. After several days, check the oldest playable timestamp. Export important footage promptly, and open the exported file to confirm it contains the segment you need. Storage inside a stolen camera leaves with it; an indoor recorder can reduce that particular risk.

Verify the installation before relying on it

1. Confirm the mode. Update supported firmware, check storage health and set the entire weekly schedule to continuous recording. Check recording settings separately from alert schedules and privacy modes.

2. Test an ordinary quiet period. Leave the scene still, then walk across it. Later, play back before, during and after the walk. Repeat at night. Inspect the saved video rather than relying on live view or a colored timeline bar.

3. Check both outage scenarios. Loss of internet is different from loss of power. Local storage may continue during an internet outage, but remote viewing and alerts may fail. A disconnected camera-to-recorder network path can interrupt centralized recording even if the internet works. Test the exact setup and its recovery after a restart.

4. Back up the complete recording path. A powered camera stops when its supply fails unless backup power is present. With PoE/NVR, consider the recorder and the device supplying PoE; include required network equipment. A UPS has finite runtime. Verify the archive after a safe outage test rather than assuming every component recovered.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Wi-Fi security camera record continuously?

Yes, when the specific model supports it and has sustained power and suitable storage. Wi-Fi describes the connection. It does not establish whether the camera saves motion clips or an entire timeline.

Does pre-roll mean the camera records all day?

No. Pre-roll saves a short period before a detected event. Ask whether you can retrieve a quiet, non-event period from several hours earlier; that is the more useful test of an all-day archive.

Do I need a subscription or an NVR?

Neither is automatically required. Supported cameras can save continuous video to microSD. An NVR is useful for centralized storage and multiple cameras. For any cloud plan, verify that it explicitly includes continuous video and its retention period; event history alone is insufficient.

Bottom line: buy the recording system you need: a verified continuous mode, enough storage and dependable power. Then prove it works by playing back the hours when nothing triggered an alert.
